My Perfect Weekend...

The McCall Winter carnival is the best place to spend a three day weekend right after the New Year dawns. The city of McCall will no doubt be filled with others showing up to either carve or view the multitude of ice sculptures and participate in activities; however, the atmosphere of the city lightens the mood of all present and it makes the city a busy but happy place.

I like to start each day by walking from my hotel in downtown McCall to the Pancake and Christmas house for breakfast. I start my morning by sharing a delicious warm cinnamon roll with my family while we wait for our enormous plate covering pancakes to show up. We usually have hot and soothing coca to warm ourselves up as we finish our breakfast before we leave the Pancake House to wander through the various spectacular snow sculptures.

The snow sculptures are the main attraction at the Winter Carnival but the fireworks over the lake are a sight to see as well which closes the first day of the Winter Carnival. The second day opens with more snow sculpture viewing a community pancake breakfast followed by a parade. When you tire of the parade you can enjoy wine tasting, a local university band, and even some wood carving. The second day of the carnival finishes up with a community dance and you can allow your teenagers to spend that time at the teen dance held at a local middle school. The last day of the carnival winds down with snow tubing, free skiing and a craft faire and all the hot chocolate you can drink. The Winter Carnival may happen at a time when the rest of the state is a frozen wasteland but if you spend time doing the right things in this quiet mountain town you will forget about the cold because you will be having too much fun!
